2004 gmc yukon review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The right size for active families. introductionthe gmc yukon is sized right for large families. Its cabin is roomy, it can carry a load of people and a mountain of cargo, and it can pull heavy trailers. The yukon denali is a luxury version that adds a sumptuous interior, a bigger engine, and full-time all-wheel drive.  for 2004, yukon comes standard with a tire-pressure monitor and sophisticated hydroboost brakes. lineupthree trim levels are available for the gmc yukon: sle, slt, and denali.  yukon sle 34,910) and sle 4wd 37,610) come loaded with manual dual-zone air conditioning, a split-bench front seat with power adjustment for the driver, anti-lock brakes (abs), self-leveling suspension, cd stereo with eight speakers, power windows, power door locks, fog lights, tinted glass, heated outside mirrors, leather wrapped steering wheel, and alarm. A 285-horsepower 4. 8-liter v8 is standard; a 295-horsepower 5. 3-liter v8 is optional 700).  yukon slt 37,440) and slt 4wd 40,140) adds automatic tri-zone air conditioning, a premium bose stereo with nine speakers, high-back bucket seats with leather inserts, rear seat audio controls, and assist steps. New slt options for 2004 include 17-inch, six-spoke premium aluminum wheels 295), which can be shod with either all-season blackwalls or whitewalls, or on/off-road blackwalls. The slt plus equipment group 40,895 or $43,595 with 4wd) upgrades the quality of the leather and adds more power adjustments and a memory function to the seats. Slt plus also features side-impact airbags, outside mirrors with ground illumination and turn signals (and electrochromic dimming on the driver's side), power-adjustable pedals, third-row seating, and more. The 5. 3-liter v8 comes standard on slt plus.  yukon denali 49,310) is the most upscale model, and comes with a big 6. 0-liter v8 engine, full-time all-wheel drive, stabilitrak stability control, and a computer-controlled autoride suspension. In fact, nearly every desirable feature is standard on denali, including heated leather 10-way power seats, on-star driver assistance, nine-speaker bose stereo with xm satellite radio capability and in-dash six-disc cd changer, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Yukon is 20 inches shorter than the chevrolet suburban and gmc yukon xl, making it much easier to park and garage. It is slightly smaller than the ford expedition, but longer and wider than the gmc envoy, chevy trailblazer, and ford explorer. Yukon is wider and shorter than the envoy xl, giving it better stability in cornering and more comfortable accommodations for third-row occupants.  yukon is conservatively styled. It looks like a shortened version of the yukon xl, which looks like a fancy suburban, which is what it is. Its arched roofline provides extra headroom for the second and third-row seats.  the denali is distinguished from the other yukons by its aftermarket-inspired chrome grille. For 2004, the denali also sports a chromed exhaust tip.  most yukons come with a rear hatch, which lifts up to open. The rear window can be opened separately for quick loading or unloading of smaller items. However, yukon sle and slt models offer old-fashioned side-by-side cargo doors as a delete option. Cargo doors are sometimes more useful, particularly when towing trailers. interiorthe yukon is comfortable and convenient. Getting inside is easy, thanks to pull-out style door handles that replace the old lift-up style openers. Step-in height is lower than in previous-generation models, making it easier to climb into the driver's seat.  the front seats were redesigned for 2003, but we have trouble getting comfortable at times. The denali's leather upholstery looks and feels nice, however. Also, the shoulder harnesses fit well and are easy to wear because they are mounted on the seats. Visibility out of the yukon is very good, thanks to large windows.  second-row seating is roomy and comfortable. Second-row bucket seats are optional 490) in slt and denali, but not sle. They offer excellent support and can be adjusted individually. We sometimes think they're more comfortable than the front seats.  yukon's optional third-row seat 360-$760, depending on upholstery) provides space for adults' feet. It isn't a lot of space, but it is there. The third row folds, flips, slides and removes easily. Like most third rows, it's best for kids or occasional use. Getting into and out of that third-row seat isn't easy for adults. Climate controls and audio controls are easy to use yet are quite sophisticated in their operation. We enjoyed the bose nine-speaker stereo with subwoofer. Rather than embedding the antenna in a window for fashion reasons, the yukon uses an external antenna for improved radio reception. For 2004, onstar and xm satellite radio share a single, low-profile exterior antenna.  the panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1295) includes a seven-inch flip-down screen for second-seat passengers; plus two sets of wireless (infrared) headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs. For 2004, the dvd player and sunroof are packaged together in the sun, sound & entertainment package.  safety is enhanced by dual-stage front airbags. Side-impact airbags are optional 350) on sle and slt, standard on slt plus and denali. On bumpy rural byways that make some suvs feel like pogo sticks, the yukon rides with impressive smoothness. On smooth highways, the yukon cruises effortlessly. Handling is impressive and surefooted for a full-size suv. Yukon is stable at high speed. It's much easier to park then the longer yukon xl, but it's still a full-size truck and not as maneuverable as a mid-size suv such as the gmc envoy or ford explorer.  the yukon is a truck. It comes with a live rear axle mounted on coil springs and located by five control links, an arrangement which provides a good compromise between ride/handling and cargo-carrying utility. Its front suspension is conventional in design, but uses torsion bars instead of coil springs to save space. Yukon's conventional ladder frame is fully boxed in the mid-section for maximum rigidity, while the front and rear portions are shaped by the same hydroforming technique used to make corvette frames. This rigid design is a key to the yukon's excellent ride and handling. At the very front of the frame is a section designed to crush and absorb impacts in a crash.  yukon denali's autoride computer-controlled suspension helps keep it level over bumps. This benefit is especially pronounced when towing; a trailer tends to cause the towing vehicle to rock back and forth when driving over bumps, but the autoride system keeps the denali amazingly smooth.  the combination of good visibility and confident handling give the yukon an air of nimbleness. The steering on all yukons provides good control and feedback. It's a recirculating-ball system, however, which doesn't offer the response of the rack-and-pinion steering found on the ford explorer and expedition. Its relatively tight 38. 3-foot turning diameter makes the yukon much easier to park than a standard yukon xl, which takes another 4. 7 feet of space to turn around. That makes a huge difference in the grocery store parking lot. The current yukon's turning diameter represents a big improvement over previous-generation yukon and tahoe models.  the brakes perform well. A dynamic proportioning system continuously balances the front and rear brakes for maximum effectiveness without activating the abs. To check this out, we towed a heavily laden horse trailer without trailer brakes connected and were impressed with the yukon's braking ability. All 2004 yukons now come with hydroboost brakes, which rely on hydraulic pressure rather than engine vacuum to reduce braking pressure. This upgraded system provides more power for high-deceleration stops, and improves abs performance. Hyrdoboost brakes also require less pedal force during high-deceleration stops and improve pedal effort and feel during normal operation.  under the hood, yukons employ the latest heirs to chevy's small-block v8 engine family. These generation-3 overhead-valve engines are the best yet and rival competitors' overhead-cam engines for smoothness and efficiency. Called the 5300 vortec, it's rated at 295 horsepower and 330 pounds-feet of torque. It earns an epa city/highway rating of 14/19 mpg wi. 2005 buick rainier review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth, quiet, and highly capable. introductionthe buick rainier shares its body shell and mechanical platform with gm's other mid-size suvs, the chevrolet trailblazer and gmc envoy. Rainier rides more smoothly than the other gm models, and it's among the quietest suvs we've driven. Rainier has a uniquely buick style and a near-luxury sensibility. Yet it still seats five and boasts an engine powerful enough to pull a boat or horse trailer.  as with the gmc envoy, however, choosing the rainier (especially the six-cylinder model) over the corresponding chevy may be mostly a matter of image. Just as the gmc badge stands for serious trucks, the buick name has, for over a century now, meant arrival at a certain station in life, an achievement of an elevated socio-economic plateau. From the aptly named roadmasters of the 1930s-50s, through the sculptured rivieras of the '60s, a buick has been about stepping up from the ordinary. The driver-information center monitors 13 on-board systems, a center console houses front and rear cupholders, and an overhead console includes a digital recorder, homelink garage-door transmitter, and onstar button to access one year of safe & sound service. The electrochromic rearview mirror features a compass. Traction control is standard on 2wd models.  the standard engine is gm's highly regarded vortec 4200, an inline-6 that provides an impressive 275 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Other options include power adjustable pedals 150), heated front seats 275), side-curtain airbags 495), chrome side steps 450), luggage rack 45), and a cargo storage system 165). New for 2005 is an optional etr am/fm stereo 135) with cd/mp3 player, speed-compensated volume, theftlock, auto-reverse cassette and radio data system (rds).  safety features abound. Available head-curtain side airbags 495) act like a protective curtain when deployed, unfolding from the roof rail between the a-pillar and side window header. When the bag deploys in a moderate to severe side impact, it is angled somewhat toward the window to help provide protection for front- and second-row outboard passengers. One of the rainier's designers told us that mount rainier 'reflects majesty with ruggedness and independence,' while the late grace kelly and her husband's family symbolize 'quality, sophistication and elegance.'  the buick rainier is based on the gm360 platform, a mid-size, truck-based suv also marketed as the chevrolet trailblazer, gmc envoy, and isuzu ascender. It's a solid platform featuring a frame that incorporates hydroformed steel members for optimum strength and rigidity. This strong frame helps rainier tow up to 6,700 pounds.  rainier features unique styling cues to differentiate it from the other gm models, including a distinct grille, hood, front quarter panels and rear hatch door. Its large, oval-shaped grille helps soften the boxy suv architecture. The upper section of the chrome grille provides a bold background for the buick name, with a large buick tri-shield badge set in the midst of the grille's vertical bars. The rainier's face also includes wide, three-element headlamps, with separate fog lights and side marker lights in the lower front fascia. A creased hood lends an elegant strength to the rainier's appearance.  rainier's stance is enhanced by buick-exclusive, eight-spoke brushed aluminum wheels. Six-spoke aluminum wheels with a polished finish have been added as an option on 2005 models. The rear liftgate features a separate glass hatch to offer quick access to the cargo area. Lifting the rear hatch requires some initial effort, however. interiorbuick has upgraded the rainier's interior for 2005, with real wood and leather trim on the steering wheel, a woodgrain gearshift lever, and additional chrome accents. Rainier's interior disappointed us last year, with its obviously fake woodgrain and distinctly plebian plastics. While the gmc envoy has very attractive, metallic colored heating and cooling outlets, the up-market rainier's are color-matched to the instrument panel and comparatively plain. Nor are rainier's cupholders of the jumbo-size we've found in competitive vehicles. On the other hand, there are two power outlets up front, so both driver and passenger can recharge their cell phones and power other devices.  the standard leather seats are ventilated by perforations in the center back and lower cushion areas, but the material almost looks more like vinyl than leather. Also, the seats could use more side support. However, we do like the feature that incorporates the shoulder belt into the seat back rather than having it mounted way up on the door pillar.  we also liked the instrument cluster, with its platinum-colored gauge faces and turquoise pointers that almost appear to light up against the metallic background. Not only are these gauges very attractive, but we found them easy to read, even through polarized sunglasses, which is certainly not the case with the electroluminescent gauge clusters on many other so-called luxury vehicles.  another nice feature is the large dot matrix shield on the windshield above the rear-view mirror and between the sun visors that helps block direct sunlight through this usually neglected gap. However, there's plenty of cargo room behind them: 39. 8 cubic feet, in fact. When more cargo capacity is needed, the split rear seats can be folded forward to open up to 80. 1 cubic feet of interior cavern. driving impressionthe six-cylinder engine that comes standard on the rainier is a wonderful engine, delivering plenty of power, as we've seen in the gmc envoy and chevrolet trailblazer. Called the vortec 4200, it's an inline-6, a classic design with inherent balance. The vortec 4200 has been engineered to deliver power across a wide range of engine speeds, giving it responsive acceleration in all driving situations.  the optional v8, however, provides much better acceleration. This very likely is the quietest body-on-frame suv we've ever driven. Buick used the lexus lx 470 as the target for rainier, but we think rainier itself sets a new benchmark when it comes to a quiet cabin. Double-pane, laminated glass was used for the windshield and front doors; acoustical foam sound-deadening material was used liberally to fill the doors, roof pillars and other empty spaces in the body.    rainier rides on an independent double a-arm front suspension, and a live rear axle with electroni. 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Conservative clothing hides a great new truck. introductionchevrolet has completely re-engineered and redesigned its line of pickup trucks. Now called silverado, the new pickup is better than the old one in every respect. It rides better, it handles better, it stops quicker, it's faster and more powerful and it's more comfortable. The new silverado is the most luxurious pickup truck we've ever driven. Where dodge and ford broke new ground in truck design with their ram and f-150 pickups, chevrolet has chosen a conservative design for its new silverado.  chevrolet argues that its customers are so happy with their trucks and so loyal to the brand that they want the new trucks to look just like the old ones. That may be, but we still think they look a bit on the bland side.  underneath its conservative looks is a great truck that has almost nothing in common with the old one. Even the name is new. The old c/k designation has been dropped in favor of the new silverado name. walkaroundthe 1999 chevrolet silverado is built on a completely new frame that is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The front frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape steel. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness.  three new v8 engines are available, in 4. 8-, 5. 3- and 6. 0-liter displacements. All three are based on the new gm small-block architecture that was introduced on the corvette two years ago and shared with the camaro and firebird last year. The doors and door openings are now the largest in the industry, while the cab is the roomiest.  the instrument package looks like a cross between what is found in the new corvette and what was used in the previous c/k trucks. All use pleasant graphics in white on black. The sound system control panel is located above the climate controls. The front seats were equipped with optional heaters. Air conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers.  a compass is incorporated into the lt model's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. At 6-foot 4-inches, i'm often uncomfortable in the back seats of extended-cab pickup trucks, but not in this one. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed through the side door with a wrench and a heave-ho.  about the only thing we didn't like was the design of the interior door handles, which operate in an up-and-in arc and felt loose whenever we used them. We think they need more resistance and a more positive feel. driving impressionwe loved every mile we put on the silverado lt. New mounting and isolation hardware reduces noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. Squeaks and rattles have been completely eliminated, even when flying down a rutted dirt road at 50 mph. This is one strong truck, and its strength lets the suspension soak up and manage all the bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is near-luxury. The steering has a fairly wide dead spot in the center when cruising, which chevrolet says is designed to minimize steering corrections on the highway. That's enough torque to smoke the rear tires at will. The new engine is a much better small-block than before, and we recommend the 5. 3-liter over the smaller 4. 8-liter version.  brakes have been improved substantially over the previous model and it's a welcome improvement. Braking force comes into play only an inch into the pedal travel, a welcome improvement over the mushy pedal on the previous c/k pickup. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking whether the truck is loaded or empty. Chevrolet promises huge improvements in fade resistance, pad life and heat dissipation, and after beating these brakes hard we believe them. summarythe chevrolet silverado is by far the best among the newest generation of full-size pickups from the big 3, perhaps because it is the newest design.  the silverado lt we drove is the smoothest, quietest, most civilized, best equipped, and most enjoyable pickup truck we've ever driven. 2002 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Limited model comes with v6 engine. introductionjeep's new liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekends, but want refinement, practicality, and affordability during the week.  jeep liberty is smooth, quiet, and responsive on the road. Turn off the pavement, and it'll go just about anywhere. It'll carry five people and their gear. Air conditioning 850) is an option, but a six-speaker stereo is standard.  limited edition 2wd models 21,260) come standard with the v6 engine and automatic transmission. Its seven-slat grille and round headlights are dead giveaways. The design was inspired by two radically different jeep concept vehicles: the utilitarian dakar, which looked like it was ready for a safari with an upright stance, short overhangs, and trapezoidal fenders, and the sporty jeepster, which looked like it was ready for a race across the sahara. Limited models are distinguished with body-colored trim and aluminum wheels, which create a more sophisticated appearance.  liberty's body is tall, providing the driver a commanding view of the terrain ahead. By exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length off 174. 4 inches, it's slightly longer than ford's escape. It's longer than jeep's classic wrangler as well, but 7 inches shorter and as much as 500 pounds lighter than the grand cherokee.  a neat feature: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport. interiorliberty comes with a terrific interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo.  sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with acres of headroom (best in class, according to jeep) and general roominess. The overall sense of refinement and comfort feels more passenger sedan than truck. Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests.  the rear seats are comfortable, capable of holding three people. Two adults should be happy here. Two big garbage cans fit side by side back there that had to go front to rear in a boxy old isuzu trooper. Dropping the split rear seat is a one-hand operation in the liberty; the rear seat bottom stays in place. The cargo floor isn't perfectly flat when the rear seats are folded down, however, and that's my biggest gripe with this vehicle. Nor are the rear seats readily removable as they are in the rav4. Also, the rear head rests are hard to remove and install with two buttons needed to release them.  overall, the interior presents a round motif that looks contemporary with round door handles, round instruments, round air inlets, a round horn pad. Textures and finishes are nicely done. Big gauges use black-on-beige graphics. The limited adds attractive satin chrome highlights to the instrument panel and doors. The shifter is on the tall side, but works well. Limited comes with a nice leather-wrapped steering wheel.  liberty is loaded with safety features: multi-stage front airbags deploy with less force during low speed collisions, or if the occupant is unbuckled, to reduce the risk of airbag-related injuries. Liberty is the first jeep to offer optional side curtains to protect outboard occupants from head injury in side impacts. A three-point belt for the center rear seat is standard, a safety feature that's missing from most suvs. Jacking equipment is stored under the rear seat and can be quickly grabbed as a unit. driving impressionfully capable of tackling the rubicon trail, the mother of all unpaved roads, the jeep liberty also feels quite competent rounding a high-speed sweeping turn on a wet road. Winding roads are an enjoyable experience and tooling around town and in heavy traffic is smooth and comfortable.  let's start with off-road capability: i drove a liberty v6 automatic down an off-road trail used at the annual camp jeep event near lovingston, virginia. A jeep engineer and i followed a modified wrangler driven by an off-road club member. A ford escape or a toyota rav4 would not have made it, but the liberty crossed steep ditches and gullies, where its short front and rear overhangs paid off. It wove through stands of tightly spaced trees, where its tight turning radius was a benefit. With eight inches of suspension travel, it clambered over big rocks and fallen trees. It slowly forded boulder-strewn creeks with 18 inches of rushing water. (jeep says it can handle 20 inches at 10 mph, good for flooded underpasses.) its traction up steep, muddy banks was truly impressive, with no wheelspin.  most people will order the liberty with the 3. 7-liter v6 and automatic. The v6 is also available with a heavy-duty five-speed manual. (the liberty's v6 is essentially the grand cherokee's 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 with two cylinders lopped off. A counter-rotating balance shaft was added to reduce vibration.) it's smooth and powerful, rated at 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. And it works well with the automatic. Liberty's v6 is standard on the limited edition, optional on sport models. Jeep's v6 tops the small sport-ute class and allows an impressive 5000-pound towing capacity. Shift from 2wd to 4wd on the fly with a slight pull on the hand lever. When the trail is looking really ugly, slow to 2-3 mpg and while still coasting, shift into neutral, and pull the lever up higher for low range. Jeep calls it 'uni-frame' because it's a beefed up unibody with frame-like reinforcement rails. This gives it increased strength and rigidity. 2005 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standing like a rock against new competition. introductionthe choice for best full-size pickup is not as clear as it was three years ago, when the chevrolet silverado and the gmc sierra appeared to be the leaders of the pack. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, toyota has added a crew cab model to its tundra line, and nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan. There isn't a dog among them. All are superb in their own way.  yet silverado still rides as well or better than any of them, and it handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give silverado a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Silverado's interior was significantly updated in 2003, and so was its electrical system. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable.  for 2005, most silverados come with wider, lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels, promising better handling than before. Short-box extended cabs with 4wd now offer a more powerful all-alumium v8, while a gas/electric hybrid option promises lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 include dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500.  standard equipment on all silverado models are cruise control, cd player, a step bumper, and 17-inch chromed steel wheels. The w/t (work truck) package, intended primarily for commercial and municipal fleet sales, deletes these niceties for an average credit of $1,600.  moving up to ls trim (starting at $25,265) adds a long list of comforts and appointments, including power windows, locks and mirrors; upgraded audio and upholstery; and the 4. 8-liter v8 with automatic transmission. Ls crew cabs come with the 5. 3-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $32,965) is downright luxurious, with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, bose audio, and a new version of the onstar telematics system. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on all lt models.  the z71 off-road package includes full ls trim, plus special off-road suspension, locking rear differential, p265/70r17 on/off-road tires, skid plates, high-capacity air cleaner, wheel flares, fog lamps, and deep-tinted glass.  silverado ss is a performance model equipped with a high-output 345 horsepower vortec 6000 6. 0-liter engine designed for quick acceleration and relaxed cruising. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 1,100). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs.  silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl.  optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier.  the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. A driver information center, located in the instrument panel cluster, provides various bits of information, i. 2001 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It got a complete redesign in 1999 that brought a roomier, more comfortable cabin and smoother engines, which helped it win a host of industry accolades. Decent around-town comfort combined with dirt-track-worthy underpinnings have helped it maintain its place in the hearts of loyal customers. lineuptwo trim levels are available, laredo and limited. Retail prices: laredo 2wd 27,300); laredo 4wd 29,270); limited 2wd 32,665) limited 4wd 35,095).  both trim levels offer a long list of standard features, including air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, power windows, doors and mirrors, and cruise control. For 2001, laredo gets an appearance package that includes leather seats, fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. Limited adds automatic climate control, heated mirrors, 10-way power seats with mirror memory, and an infinity 180-watt am/fm/cassette stereo system with cd.  two engines are offered. Standard equipment is jeep's 4. 0-liter inline-6, which was re-engineered for 1999. It's quieter, cleaner and more powerful, producing 195 horsepower. Optional is a 235-horsepower 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 that was introduced last year. The five-speed carries a second overdrive ratio for better highway fuel economy.  grand cherokees come standard with rear-wheel drive, but that seems like buying a louisville slugger just to hit rocks. There's no mistaking it for something else. The current model is three inches longer than pre-1999 versions but rides on the same wheelbase. Slightly rounded edges and a subtle bulge to the roofline have done nothing to mar an instantly recognizable shape. interiorthe front seats are comfortable, with thickly padded longitudinal ribs, but they seem a bit cushy for serious off-road driving. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider.  more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lie down under the load floor. Part of that impression comes from the high seating position. Controls and switches, including the jeep's once-balky turn signal/wiper combination stalk, have been improved in feel and operation. One reason the spare was relocated to under the load floor was to give more visibility rearward. This view was formerly blind because that's where the spare used to be. driving impressionjeep's grand cherokee drives like a truck, with a tall, body-rolling ride. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, it feels controlled and steady. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee.  underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions for better highway performance. But the jeep's live axle is only a drawback on paper. The jeep retains its unitbody integrated truck frame-and-body design. This unusual design strategy - also used by the smaller jeep cherokee and the nissan pathfinder - results in a platform that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. With adjustments for similar equipment, jeep says the new grand cherokee is about 50 pounds lighter overall. Less weight and a tighter turning radius help make the grand cherokee more maneuverable.  steering is quick but isolated, despite a thorough restructuring of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. Like them, the jeep is still a truck, sitting tall, rolling side-to-side in corners and high winds.  the biggest improvement in the ride of the grand cherokee is a newfound tendency to stay pointed straight ahead. A triangle link that replaces the panhard rod locating the rear axle is directly responsible for this improvement. Careful tuning of suspension and drivetrain mounts allows the live axles of the jeep a lot of compliant movement. The axles move and pivot on large bumps and dirt holes where the independent suspensions of other suvs reach their limits of travel and ultimately toss about the occupants inside.  with the 4. 7-liter v8, the grand cherokee accelerates smoothly, with none of the mechanical grumbling and roaring of the previous engines. With single overhead cams on each cylinder bank, the 4. 7-liter v8 produces 235 horsepower. Hurrying up a mountain or around weekend-warrior crazies is a breeze with the higher second gear.  grand cherokees with the six-cylinder engine come with jeep's renowned selec-trac system. This works well in heavy rainstorms or in the winter when roads are partially covered by snow and ice. Quadra-drive is the same system as quadra-trac ii, but it adds hydraulically locking front and rear differentials. By using three differentials, the system automatically sends torque front-to-rear and side-to-side whenever a wheel slips. It serves as a good suburban vehicle.  but it also tracks like daniel boone through the backcountry, and jeep claims that many of its customers use their vehicles for that purpose. Indeed, only land rovers and toyotas can compete with jeep when it comes to trail running. When the going gets rough, the jeep grand cherokee is a high-quality tool that delivers. model lineuplaredo 2wd 27,300); laredo 4wd 29,270); limited 2wd 32,665) limited 4wd 35,095). assembled indetroit, michigan. options as tested4. 7-liter v-8 engine 1,560); full-size spare tire and matching wheel 160); sienna pearl coat paint 200); quadra-drive 4wd 550). model testedlimited 4wd 35,095). 2002 bmw 3-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The 3 series is composed of sedans, coupes, convertibles, and wagons. They vary in price, power, and packaging, but all are superb cars. Each is a great driver's car within its respective price range.  all 3 series models are highly refined machines that corner, accelerate and stop swiftly. These cars put drivers in touch with the road instead of isolating them. Their interiors are well-equipped and comfortable.  styling revisions freshen the sedans and sport wagons for 2002.  it shouldn't be a surprise that the bmw 3 series continues to serve as a benchmark for other automakers. lineupthe current generation of 3 series cars debuted in 1999 and has since grown to 10 models. All 3 series models are based on the same chassis and all ride on the same 107. 3-inch wheelbase. As the nomenclature indicates, 325 models get a 2. 5-liter engine, while 330 models get a 3. 0-liter engine. Wagons are only available with the 2. 5-liter engine; sedan, coupe, and convertible are available with either engine.  the 184-horsepower 2. 5-liter engine is used in the 325i sedan 27,100); 325i sport wagon 29,500); 325ci coupe 29,100); 325ci convertible 36,100).  the 225-horsepower 3. 0-liter engine is used in the 330i sedan 33,990); 330ci coupe 34,990); and 330ci convertible 42,400). In addition to the increased power, 330 models come with more standard equipment and design upgrades. One example: 17-inch wheels with v-rated tires in place of the 325's standard 16-inch wheels with h-rated tires.  all-wheel-drive 325xi 28,850) and 330xi 35,740) sedans and the 325xi sport wagon 31,250) offer much better traction and control in slippery conditions. For 2002, these all-wheel-drive models, denoted by the x, get hill descent control added to the upgraded dynamic stability control system.  the higher price of coupes and convertibles includes a slightly higher level of luxury equipment than what comes standard on sedans and wagons.  all models come standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Automatic transmissions are available: a superb zf-built five-speed steptronic 1275).  for 2002, bmw has added functions to the standard dynamic stability control system, including a new traction-control mode. New optional run-flat tires with a monitor are available for 330 models. Also optional are new wheel designs and 18-inch wheels and tires.  smart front and front side-impact airbags come standard. Also standard (on all but the convertibles) are head-protection airbags that deploy from the headliner along the length of both sides of the cabin. Rear side-impact airbags are optional.  which model? The sport wagons add space and versatility and the only way we could tell we weren't driving a sedan was to glance into the rear view mirror; it's taut. Coupes add sports appeal with their two-door styling, while split rear seats offer some versatility. The 330 models add a lot of performance to the equation. Bmw's park distance control 350) works great, beeping to warn the driver of objects behind the car during parking maneuvers.  related to the 3 series are the m3 coupe 45,900) and m3 convertible 53,900), which boast much higher levels of performance and handling. (look for separate review of the bmw m3 at newcartestdrive. Com.). walkaroundthe 3 series cars sport bmw's classic look. They look elegant and refined, but purposeful. The roofline is long and gracefully integrated into the short rear deck. These cars are striking in appearance with their bold grilles, exotic-looking headlamps, and short front and rear overhangs. Their wheels fill the fenders and the body work seems wrapped tight, like it's stretched over muscle. The 3 series sedans have the look of a true sports sedan. And the other models take full advantage of that.  traditional quad headlamps are enclosed in aerodynamic covers. For 2002, bmw has upgraded the optional xenon headlights to bi-xenon lights, which include both low and high beams. The outer lamps provide high-intensity discharge illumination on low and high beams, while the inner lamps augment the high beams with halogen lighting. Auto-leveling of the bi-xenon lamps is included.  introduced for model year 1999, the sedan was the first of this latest generation of 3 series cars; it shares its styling and most of its body work with the sport wagon. Subtle changes to the design of the 3 series sedans and sport wagons this year has freshened their appearance. Most people won't notice the differences, but park a new 3 series sedan or sport wagon next to a 2001 model and the details are readily apparent.  for 2002, the sedan and sport wagon feature redesigned front fascias, front and rear bumpers, grilles, headlamps, tail lamps, hoods, and fenders. Similar to the theme set by the new 7 series, the headlamps now tilt up at the trailing edges of the wraparounds rather than tilting down as they have traditionally. Bmw also redesigned the shape of the cutouts below the headlamps. When equipped with the aerodynamic package, the front fascia looks like more of an air dam than before with round integrated fog lamps instead of small, thin rectangular lights. This year the lower grille is split all the way across. Bumpers, front and rear, have been given a simpler, cleaner look and the taillight units' functional segments reapportioned to give the main taillights greater illuminated area. The grilles, continuing bmw's dual-kidneys tradition, have been widened. The hood's character lines now sweep outward and rearward from the grilles' upper outer corners back to the body's a-pillars. Front fenders are also modified, with more prominent wheel-opening flares that interrupt the side character lines for an additional element of design interest.  coupe and convertible models were introduced for 2000 with updated design cues and go into 2002 without any significant styling changes. Their headlamp cluster wraparounds taper down rather than up.  well-designed exterior door handles are easy to grab. interiorthe 3 series interior is designed for the serious driver. Power adjustments come standard on all models except 325i sedans. The manual controls on the 325i sedan work well, though they are best used when the car is stationary. The 10-way power seats that come with the optional sport package are superb, adding more side bolstering for winding roads, and slide-out thigh support.  the leather-covered steering wheel tilts and telescopes for optimum adjustment. Its slim design is a benefit of the latest in compact airbag packaging. Audio and speed controls on the steering wheel work well and add convenience. Two different steering wheels are used depending on body style and model.  dashboard and door panels are rich in appearance, and appealing to the eye. For 2002, a new titanium finish on the instrument panel, console, and doors comes standard. Genuine myrtle wood inserts are optional. The instruments themselves feature soft orange lighting, which help reduce glare at night; some people find orange instrument lighting easier on the eyes than other colors.  most switches fall intuitively to the driver's fingertips, but the 3 series interior is not without its faults. Window controls are located on the center console, requiring a glance down to open or close a windows. Having the controls on the doors would make them much easier to use. Auto up/auto down is available for all windows and the sunroof, which is a nice feature.  automatic climate control and a microfilter ventilation system are standard. For 2002, automatic headlamps are available.  the in-dash single-cd player that now comes standard is easy to operate; the previous cassette deck is available as a no-cost option. The harmon kardon stereo with 12 upgraded speakers sounds great. Available steering wheel audio controls work well and add convenience.  i don't particularly care for the center console. The flip down armrest is a bit in the way when shifting and unattractive shallow cup holders in the center console seem like an afterthought.  the back seat is roomy enough for two adults during a night on the town, but it's not as roomy as some of the other cars in its class. The trunk is small, and the trunk opening is even smaller. However, the cold weather package 1000) adds split fold-down rear seats with a ski boot and armrest, plus other features.  sport wagons seem the perfect solution for enthusiast drivers who need some cargo capacity. When the car is unlocked, the rear hatch can be opened by touching the electric release above the license plate; or just the rear glass can be opened by pressing a button under the rear wiper. The rear cargo cover is nicely designed with a vinyl panel that easily slides out and hooks into pl. Bucket Seats✔ Power Seats✔ Climate Control✔ CD Player✔ Sport Package✔ Sunroof/Moonroof
